I Won’t Watch Downton Abbey
. . . even though I LOVE IT! I’ve literally been waiting a year for it to return and now I refuse to watch the first episode.
Until I finish something.
I have a list. A checklist that needs to be completed by a certain (soon upcoming) date. I don’t have tons of extra hours in my day. The only reasonable place to cut out the time I need is by carving into my “down time” – my “Downton time,” actually. The time I use to watch TV.
This will not be forever. I am not a gladiator. I WILL reward myself with a Downton binge once my checklist is complete. But until it is, I’m denying myself in an attempt to get something finished.
I’m watching other things: basketball, a sitcom not to be name on the grounds that I might incriminate myself, and the remainder of the football season. I’m not CRAZY; I’m just trying to dangle a particular carrot in front of my procrastinating self in an attempt to keep my proverbial rear in gear.
Think it will work? I hope so!
Ever given up something you wanted in the short-term for the sake of something you wanted in the long-term?
UPDATE 1/20/2012: Checklist complete. Downton Abbey this weekend!

I definitely had to click on that title! All I hear is raves about this show. I guess picking up new shows that everyone raves about is something I usually deny myself.
I gotta get a little gladiator right now too. I’m pretty sure internet surfing is my demise and constantly wanting a movie or Friends episode in the background while I procrastinate on those things I should really be doing. (I.e., my WIP MISSES ME).
I too had to read what you were saying! But after reading, kudos to you. I have given up something in the short term and the long term result is way more than worth it.
I may have to see if/what short term pleasures are putting off or preventing long term joys. Good thoughts.
You are so tricky! Abstaining from Downton Abbey would be more than enough motivation for me. Good luck to you!
You are brilliant.Which, I already knew. I think you could put Watch Downtown at the bottom of your checklist for incentive.
You’re gonna love the first episode – it was SO good!!
Kidding – I’m waiting to watch with you & I’m proud of your drive!
We love Downton Abbey. I tried sustaining myself with Upstairs Downstairs, but they only had the first 13 episodes of that, so it didn’t last long.
You’ll laugh, and perhaps this is a bit too much to admit in the cyber world, but I often “deny” small things to make sure I get something accomplished. Because I work from home, I have to be super motivated, and that’s not always easy. Sometimes I won’t even let myself get up to go to the bathroom until I get a particular task finished. TMI, I know.
I have the whole Upstairs Downstairs series somewhere here, Carol, if you want to borrow it.
Good on ya, Lic!
